Anne Akiko Meyers

Anne Akiko Meyers is an American violinist who is widely acclaimed for her pure sound, passionate and poetic interpretations, and her drive in commissioning new compositions. Meyers has been a regular at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House and many other of the world’s premier venues. She has appeared as soloist with many top orchestras, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Anne Akiko Meyers was born in San Diego, California to an American father and a Japanese mother. She made her début aged twelve with the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta conducting. She graduated from the Juilliard School in 1990 where she had studied with Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir and Masao Kawasaki.

Meyers has recorded on numerous different record labels ever since her début disc aged 18, which included violin concertos by Samuel Barber and Max Bruch with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Aged 20, Meyers began touring internationally and recording exclusively for RCA Red Seal, with whom she recorded an impressive discography. Meyers now records for Sony.

Meyers is a champion of contemporary music and has premiered works by composers John Corigliano, Mason Bates, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Jennifer Higdon, Arvo Pärt and Einojuhani Rautavaara. She was ranked as the top selling classical instrumentalist of 2014 on billboard’s traditional classical charts on the strength of her Vivaldi Four Seasons Album.

Meyers plays on the Vieuxtemps Guarneri violin, which was given to her on lifetime loan. It is said to be one of the most important violins ever made and one of the most expensive in existence. Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu made it in 1741 and it belonged to the Belgian violinist and composer Henri Vieuxtemps during the 19th century. Speaking on NPR, Meyers stated: "You know, I'm so honored to be playing this instrument, to hold history in my hands, but also to know how to use it".
